Zadran half-century leads Afghanistan to warm-up win over West Indies

After beating Scotland in their first warm-up match for the T20 World Cup, Afghanistan repeated the trick against West Indies in Bengaluru.

Afghanistan kept up their strong preparation for the T20 World Cup as they beat West Indies by 23 runs.

After whitewashing the Windies in a three-match T20 series last month, Ibrahim Zadran's knock of 51 and figures of 2-14 from Azmatullah Omarzai secured another win here.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43) and Zadran gave Afghanistan a solid platform to build on, putting on an impressive opening stand before the former was dismissed in the ninth over.

Zadran, seemingly to ensure he did not overwork himself prior to the World Cup, then retired, with Darwish Rasooli (27) and Omarzai (35) following suit as Afghanistan posted a score of 182-6.

But West Indies found themselves 38-3 at the end of the fifth over as Shai Hope (5), Brandon King (11) and Roston Chase (6) fell cheaply.

And despite a late flurry from Matthew Forde, who plundered 52 from 26 balls, West Indies fell short of their target ahead of their opening match of the tournament against Scotland.

Data Debrief: Afghanistan go back-to-back

After reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 edition of the World Cup, Afghanistan will be confident of going one step further here after another solid pre-tournament display. They start their campaign against New Zealand on Sunday.

They followed up their emphatic victory over Scotland with an equally ruthless display here, led by Zadran's half-century, which marked his second-highest total against West Indies, only bettered by his unbeaten 87 against them last month.

Despite being on the losing side, Forde produced his highest score in the shortest format, eclipsing the 29 not out he managed against New Zealand in November 2025, to head into the World Cup in form.
