Zhu's giant-killing run at the Ningbo Open continues with Andreeva upset
Mirra Andreeva's hopes of reaching the WTA Finals were dealt a blow after she lost to wildcard Lin Zhu at the Ningbo Open on Wednesday.
Lin Zhu's sensational run at the Ningbo Open continued as she stunned top seed Mirra Andreeva to reach the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Having already defeated Emma Raducanu across three sets in the first round, Zhu repeated the trick here to register a 4-6 6-3 6-2 comeback triumph.
Her reward for the victory is a tie against another seed in Diana Shnaider, who produced a turnaround of her own earlier in the day to down Karolina Muchova.
Andreeva appeared in control of the match during the first set after getting the better of Zhu's serve in the seventh game, but took the early lead at the fourth time of asking.
The second set saw both players exchange breaks as they tried to take control of the encounter, but it was wildcard Zhu who put herself in the ascendancy.
She reeled off the final four games to force a decider, and carried her momentum into the third set by putting Andreeva on the ropes with an immediate break of serve.
The world number six found herself 4-1 down but managed to break back to threaten her opponents' lead, but it mattered little as Zhu closed out the upset in style.
What a match

Data Debrief: Andreeva opens the door for Paolini and Rybakina
Andreeva was the strong favourite coming into the tournament here, but an underwhelming end to the Asian swing was compounded here, with this her third consecutive defeat in as many singles matches.
And her downfall against Zhu was on serve, with the 18-year-old registering 12 double faults to her opponents four, while she also only won 58% (36/62) of her first-serve points, lower than Zhu's 65% (44/68).
This result has put Andreeva's hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals at risk, with Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina, who are also in action at the tournament, still in with a shout of stealing in with a good run in Ningbo.
