Wimbledon: Fritz marches on after outlasting Davidovich Fokina

Having endured mammoth clashes so far, Taylor Fritz needed just four sets this time to make it through to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Taylor Fritz ensured there would be no repeat of his mammoth five-setters from his previous matches at Wimbledon after booking his place in the fourth round on Friday.

Fritz, who had been pushed the distance by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo, proved too strong for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Centre Court.

The fifth seed cruised to a 6-4 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 victory in three hours and 12 minutes after overcoming a third-set wobble.

Fritz started strongly, earning a break in the first game before defending four break points in the next to hold onto his advantage. He almost got another break late in the first set, but could not convert the set point, instead serving to love to take the lead.

The second set followed the same pattern, with the American converting his second break point in the first game. He needed a medical timeout shortly after, though, having dived to the grass to meet a drop shot and cut his elbow.

Fritz converted his second set point to put himself in a commanding position, but he could not hold onto that in the third set despite racing into a 5-2 lead.

Davidovich Fokina dug in, with a three-game winning streak turning the tide, and he pulled one back after a strong tie-break.

Fritz did not give him a chance to build on that momentum, however, winning six games in a row in the fourth set to book his place in the round of 16, where he will face Luciano Darderi or Jordan Thompson.

Fellow American Ben Shelton, meanwhile, is through to the third round having completed his victory over Rinky Hijikata on Friday.

Their match was cut short on Thursday due to bad light, despite Shelton being in a position to serve out the match.

And when play resumed, it took him just 71 seconds to wrap up the 6-2 7-5 6-4 victory. He will face Marton Fucsovics next.

Data Debrief: Fritz continues to shine on grass

It has already been a long tournament for Fritz at Wimbledon, but he showed his determination to keep it going.

Among top five seeds, only two players have conceded more games en route to the men's singles fourth round at Wimbledon in the Open Era than Fritz (66) - Arthur Ashe (77) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (70).

The 27-year-old has now won each of his last seven matches, having been triumphant at Eastbourne last week, and is into the fourth round for the third time.
