Swiatek battles back from first-set bagel to beat Keys in Madrid

Madison Keys became the ninth player to bagel Iga Swiatek, but was unable to repeat her Australian Open semi-final victory in Madrid.

Iga Swiatek booked her place in the Madrid Open semi-finals after coming from a set down to beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys.

In a rematch from their final four encounter at Melbourne Park earlier this year, Swiatek exacted revenge on the American to earn a 0-6 6-3 6-2 win in one hour and 45 minutes.

But Keys looked set to beat Swiatek once again following a stunning first set, becoming the ninth player to bagel the world number two.

Indeed, it was the first time since Eastbourne 2021 (against Daria Kasatkina) that Swiatek dropped a set 6-0, completing 625 sets since that without losing by that scoreline.

Swiatek, however, responded in style in the second, earning a break in back-to-back games before closing out the set to take the match all the way.

And the Pole carried her momentum into the third set, winning the final four games, with her victory sealed after Keys sent a forehand long and wide of the mark.

"Honestly, it was one of the weirdest matches I've ever played," Swiatek said in her on-court interview. "I didn't feel like [the first set] was that bad.

"I felt the ball well - it just went super long. I tried to play a bit shorter, and with some mistakes by Maddy, the momentum changed in the end. I'm happy that I did it."

Data Debrief: Swiatek survives rare bagel

Swiatek is only the second player in the past 40 years to defeat a top-five opponent at a WTA clay court event after conceding a 0-6 opening set, along with Steffi Graf at Roland-Garros in 1992 against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Her victory saw her reach a 20th career WTA-1000 semi-final from 36 main draws – since the format's introduction in 2009, only Serena Williams (31) has reached 20 WTA-1000 semi-finals from fewer main draws.

Swiatek (71.0%, 49-20) has also now surpassed Williams (70.9%) for the second-highest win rate against WTA top 10 opponents, now only trailing Graf (75.0%) - minimum 10 matches.
