Rybakina overcomes Yastremska in thrilling contest at Ningbo

Elena Rybakina was made to work for her spot in the quarter-finals of the Ningbo Open after a strong challenge from Dayana Yastremska.

Elena Rybakina booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the Ningbo Open after a hard-fought victory against Dayana Yastremska.

Rybakina battled her way to a 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 win over two hours and 51 minutes in China to set up a last eight clash against Ajla Tomljanovic.

It was Rybakina who blinked first in the opening set, losing her serve in the sixth game, but she broke Yastremska's serve on back-to-back occasions before saving two break points on her way to clinching the first.

The pair then exchanged breaks twice in the second before Yastremska held her nerve in a tense tiebreak. Rybakina failed to convert two match points before her counterpart won four consecutive points to force a deciding set.

There was little room for error in the third, and Rybakina's converted break point in the sixth game proved to be the difference as she went on to secure the win with an ace.

She will be joined in the quarter-finals by Jasmine Paolini, who managed to defeat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets earlier on.

Despite seeing her serve broken in the very first game of the match, Paolini's dominance proved to be too much for her opponent as she cruised to a 6-2 7-5 win.

The second seed will now face Belinda Bencic in the last eight.

Data Debrief: Race to Riyadh heats up

Paolini was impressive in her victory, landing 75% of her first serves and recording 14 winners to 17 unforced errors. On the other hand, Kudermetova's first-serve percentage was down at 55% and her 22 winners were outweighed by 38 unforced errors.

Paolini came into the tournament knowing she would secure her place in the WTA Finals in Riyadh if she reached the showpiece match in Ningbo, but the Italian could achieve this even sooner.

If Rybakina loses against Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals, a win against Bencic would be enough for Paolini to reach the WTA Finals.
