Navarro joins exclusive club with 6-0 6-0 final triumph
Emma Navarro won her first title since triumphing at Hobart last year, as she was much too good for Emiliana Arango in Mexico.
Emma Navarro became just the fifth player this century to win a WTA final by a 6-0 6-0 scoreline, as she dominated qualifier Emiliana Arango in Sunday's Merida Open final.
Playing as the top seed at a WTA event for the first time in her career, Navarro had not dropped a single set en route to the final, and she went a step further in the showpiece match.
The world number 10 only needed 55 minutes to wrap up her victory, bringing up five break points in each set and converting two on both occasions.
Arango, who had never previously been beyond the last eight at a WTA event, barely got a look in on Navarro's serve and struggled on her own serve.
Arango won just 30% of her first-serve points compared to 76% for Navarro, who converted her third match point when her opponent looped a forehand long from the baseline.
Data Debrief: Double bagel for Navarro
Navarro achieved a rare feat on Sunday by not dropping a game in a WTA Tour final.
Only four players had previously accomplished that since 2000, and none had done so in the last four years.
The other players to achieve that are Marion Bartoli (Quebec City 2006), Agnieszka Radwanska (Sydney 2013), Simona Halep (Bucharest 2016) and Iga Swiatek (Rome in 2021).
