Taylor Fritz got his ATP Finals campaign up and running with a comfortable victory over tournament debutant Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. 

Musetti was drafted in as a last-minute replacement for the injured Novak Djokovic, but the Italian was unable to deliver in front of his home crowd as Fritz earned a 6-3 6-4 triumph. 

Fritz struggled to contain Musetti early on and was forced to save four break points in the third game of the opening set. 

However, Fritz got the better of his opponent's serve in the following game before claiming the early advantage to love, but Musetti continued to push the American all the way. 

A mammoth first game of the second set this time saw Musetti save four break points before getting over the line, only for Fritz to reel off the next three in quick succession. 

Musetti looked set to extend the match after finding himself 30-0 up at 5-4 down, but Fritz held his nerve to get his first win on the board with a huge forehand winner at the net.

Fritz joins Carlos Alcaraz at the top of the Jimmy Connors Group after the Spaniard kick-started his title charge with a victory over Alex de Minaur on Sunday.

Data Debrief: Fritz matches career-best haul

Fritz has often produced his best displays at the ATP Finals, having lost the showpiece match last year to Jannik Sinner as well as making the semi-finals on debut in 2024. 

But the 28-year-old will be confident of putting together another title tilt here given his form this year. Indeed, Fritz registered his 53rd victory at ATP-level in 2025, equalling the most wins he has managed in a single season (also 2023 and 2024).

He is also the player with the most aces at ATP-level over the last 12 months, with his 13 against Musetti here taking his yearly tally to 849.
