Alcaraz chasing 'big goals' at season-ending ATP Finals

Carlos Alcaraz is looking to win the ATP Finals for the first time, and also reclaim top spot in the ATP rankings from Jannik Sinner.

Carlos Alcaraz says he has "two big goals" in his sights heading into the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

The Spaniard has enjoyed another magnificent year, winning eight ATP titles, including the French Open and US Open, while also recording the most match wins at ATP level (67) and ATP Masters events (21).

The latter saw him reclaim the world number one ranking at the expense of Sinner, who he defeated in four sets in the Flushing Meadows championship match.

However, the Italian - the youngest man in the Open Era to reach all four major finals - has leapfrogged Alcaraz back to the summit following his triumphs in Vienna and Paris, so the race to be the year-end number one is set to go right to the wire.

Alcaraz, who is drawn alongside Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Alex De Minaur in Jimmy Connors Group, can regain top spot with a deep run in Turin, where he is looking to triumph for the first time.

"They are two big goals. I would love to win this tournament someday, and the number one title has been a clear objective throughout the season," he told reporters.

"In the end, I think it's turning out to be a good battle between Jannik and me to see who finishes as number one. If he finishes first, it's because he's earned it and has had a magnificent end to the season.

"I am going to try to fight to prevent that from happening. If it does happen, it won't be a disappointment. The season has gone incredibly well."

With Sinner drawn in the Bjorn Borg Group, he cannot meet Alcaraz until at least the semi-finals, though they could only face off in the final if they both win their groups.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard is now allowing himself to look too far ahead.

"It's a bit early to think about that," he added. "For me, if you want to win the tournament, you have to beat the best. And if I want to win, I'll have to beat Jannik in the semi-finals or the final, or another top player in the semi-finals or the final.

"The important thing here is to advance, and if it's by one player, all the better. And if it's by two, we'll have to assess the situation and give our best against whoever we face in those semi-finals."
