T20 World Cup: England youngster Bethell out to build on 'special' performances

Jacob Bethell was one of England's standout performers at the T20 World Cup, and it has been a positive winter for the all-format batter.

Jacob Bethell wants to develop his game further after a "special" winter with England in the Ashes and T20 World Cup.

Bethell played in the final two matches of the Ashes after England had already lost the series, but staked his claim for a starting position in the Test with a maiden Test century in Sydney.

The 22-year-old took that momentum into the T20 World Cup, where he scored 105 off 48 balls in their semi-final defeat to India as England looked to chase down a record target of 253.

After also scoring an ODI century against South Africa in September 2025, Bethell became the youngest England player to score a ton in all three formats.

He is fourth overall to do so, and the second player to achieve the feat at this T20 World Cup after captain Harry Brook, who scored a century against Pakistan in the Super 8.

"Me and Brooky were joking about who was going to be the first to get all three between us," Bethell said.

"He was like 'You're batting at three so it's got to be you' and then took my spot at three and did it.

"Both of us can sit back and be very proud of ourselves but at the end of the day his came in a winning cause and mine in a losing cause.

"He'll always have that up on me but it's been special.

"My game's evolved a lot over the past six or seven months and I'll look to take that further.

"It's been a nice winter, performances we'd have liked a bit more, but got to keep coming back."

Bethell, who is yet to score a century in domestic first-class cricket, will certainly be backed to bat at number three when England's Test summer starts against New Zealand on June 4.
