Swiatek overcomes Eala to start Madrid title defence

Iga Swiatek had to come from behind to start her Madrid Open title defence, digging deep to get the better of Alexandra Eala.

Iga Swiatek exacted revenge on Alexandra Eala, coming from a set and a break down to progress at the Madrid Open.

Swiatek was stunned by Eala in the quarter-finals in Miami last month but triumphed 4-6 6-4 6-2 in two hours and 15 minutes this time around.

Eala looked set to redo the feat as she took control from the off, getting a break in the opening game.

With a 5-2 advantage, she failed to serve out the set, with Swiatek breaking to love, but Eala got over the line, converting her third set-point attempt.

Eala started the second set in the same way, and earned a 3-2 advantage, but the Pole dug deep, winning five consecutive games from 4-4 to force a decider, which she started strong.

At 5-1, Swiatek had the opportunity to serve out the match, but Eala would not go down without a fight, earning her fifth break.

However, Swiatek hit straight back to seal her place in the third round, where she will face Linda Noskova.

Elsewhere, Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Aryna Sabalenka to win the Stuttgart Open on Monday, made an early exit in the Spanish capital.

She lost to compatriot Anastasija Sevastova 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.

Mirra Andreeva, however, did make it through to the next round with a straight-sets win over Marie Bouzkova. It was her eighth win at the Madrid Open from 10 matches; only Ons Jabeur (nine) has registered more wins from her first 10 matches at this event since the inception of the tournament.

Data Debrief: Swiatek starts strong

Wildcard Eala pulled off quite the shock in Miami, halting Swiatek's progress, but the world number two ensured the youngster did not defy the odds for a second time.

Swiatek is the fourth player since the Tier I introduction in 1990 to win her opening match for more than 25 consecutive Tier I/WTA-1000 appearances, after Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport.

This victory also means she now has the highest winning percentage at the Madrid Open since the tournament's inception in 2009 (87.5%), surpassing Serena Williams (more than 10 matches played at the event).
