Defending Davis Cup champions Italy will be without world number two Jannik Sinner for next month's finals in Bologna. 

Sinner led Italy's successful title defence in Spain last year, but will not be a part of their latest squad for the Final 8, which takes place in November. 

The Italians have named Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori as their five competitors in the competition. 

Sinner's absence will be a huge blow for Italy, with the 24-year-old reaching all four grand slam finals in 2025, emerging victorious at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. 

"Jannik Sinner has not given his availability for 2025," Italian captain Filippo Volandri said.

"The Davis Cup is, and will always remain, his home, and I am sure that Jannik will soon be part of the team again.

"In the meantime, I can count on a group ready to fight and give everything for the blue jersey."

Italy face Austria in the quarter-finals of the competition, with fellow title hopefuls Spain on the opposite side of the draw, led by six-time grand slam winner Carlos Alcaraz. 

Alcaraz will look to spearhead the Spaniards' charge to their first Davis Cup title since 2019, when Rafael Nadal helped clinch a 2-0 victory over Canada in the showpiece match. 

Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, and Marcel Granollers were also selected by Spain, who take on Czechia in their last-eight tie. 

World number three Alexander Zverev is also set to make his first appearance at the Davis Cup Finals, with the 28-year-old named in the Germany team.
