Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula will face off in the Miami Open quarter-finals after both players recorded straight-sets wins in the last 16 on Monday, but there was a surprise exit for Amanda Anisimova.

Australian Open champion Rybakina defeated Talia Gibson 6-2 6-2 in just 64 minutes to end the qualifier's impressive run in Florida.

Rybakina rode an early break to success in the first set, and though she had to wait a little longer in the second, the third seed never looked back after breaking to love in game five.

"I think overall I served well all the matches I played here, and also in all these important moments I was staying aggressive and was winning these key moments," Rybakina said. "For now, it has been working well."

Rybakina holds a 5-3 head-to-head advantage over her next opponent Pegula, who enjoyed a routine win of her own against Jaqueline Cristian, triumphing 6-4 6-1 in 68 minutes.

There was no such luck for fellow home hope Anisimova, though, as she crashed to a 6-2 6-2 defeat against 12th seed Belinda Bencic.

Bencic, who will now face Coco Gauff in her 12th career WTA 1000 quarter-final, broke in game three of both sets and was able to stretch her advantage on both occasions.

Looking forward to her meeting with Gauff, Bencic said: "I'm very excited. I'm definitely up for the challenge. 

"I'm really excited to challenge her again, and to try to see what I can improve and do better. We'll see tomorrow; it's going to be a good match and a good atmosphere."

Data Debrief: Quarter-final landmark for Rybakina

Having reached her first WTA 1000 quarter-final in Wuhan in 2019, Rybakina has now reached that stage at 20 such tournaments. 

She is only the fifth player to do so during that span, alongside Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Pegula and Gauff.
