Gregor Townsend has signed on to remain Scotland's head coach until the end of 2027, after the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The 52-year-old's contract had been due to expire in April 2026, sparking rumours that English side Newcastle Red Bulls were interested in him as a possible director of rugby.

However, Scottish Rugby announced on Wednesday that their longest-serving professional-era coach will continue through to the 2027 World Cup.

Since taking charge in 2017, Townsend has overseen 94 Tests, achieving 53 wins, 40 defeats and one draw — an unforgettable 38-38 against England in 2019.

Among his highlights are Scotland's first win in Paris in over two decades, victory at Twickenham for the first time in 38 years, four consecutive Calcutta Cup triumphs, and four wins in five over Australia.

"Being Scotland head coach is a massive honour and true privilege," Townsend said.

"The opportunity to coach my country at another Rugby World Cup is exciting, and I am hugely motivated to help the team perform to its potential.

"Over recent years, I have been really encouraged by the progress the team has made. There is a real belief within the squad that they can achieve special things, and I can't wait to work with them again to help make this happen."

With four home fixtures this autumn, Townsend is set to bring up his 100th match in charge during the Six Nations next February when Scotland host England in Edinburgh.
