Morikawa: 'Chaos' comment did not provoke Ryder Cup crowd trouble

Last month's Ryder Cup was overshadowed by crowd trouble, with players from Team Europe facing fan abuse and confrontations with spectators.

Collin Morikawa admits spectators at the Ryder Cup crossed the line, but he does not believe he encouraged bad behaviour at the event by calling for fans to create "chaos".

Morikawa said before last month's event that the home crowd should bring "absolute chaos" to Bethpage Black to give the United States an advantage,

The hosts were unable to overcome a poor showing on Friday and Saturday as Europe triumphed 15-13, but the weekend was overshadowed by crowd trouble.

Rory McIlroy had several confrontations with spectators, at one point refusing to putt after being abused, while an announcer at the event stepped down ahead of Sunday's play after encouraging fans to chant expletives at the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy's wife Erica also had beer thrown at her, while Shane Lowry had to be restrained from another fan after being insulted during a Saturday fourballs match.

Don Rea Jr., the president of the PGA of America, issued an apology to Europe's players for fan behaviour that "crossed the line" last week, having previously downplayed the severity of the incidents.

Morikawa found the scenes troubling, saying ahead of the Baycurrent Classic in Japan: "There's a line that needs to be drawn. We have to learn how to find that division of what's appropriate and what's not."

But when asked if his pre-competition rallying cry had stoked tensions between American fans and Europe's players, Morikawa said he was not responsible for the disruption.

"I think we've taken what I said a little out of context," he said. "I think Ryder Cups are meant to have a lot of energy, right?

"I think me saying the word 'chaos'... I didn't mean for them to be rude, right?

"So that's not on me, to take credit for people being rude. I think what I meant was that I wanted energy, right?

"You want people to be proud of the country or countries they're rooting for. I don't think me saying one word... I don't think I have the power to do that to people."
