McIlroy says he 'found something' at U.S. Open ahead of Travelers Championship

A good finish at the U.S. Open last week is giving Rory McIlroy cause for optimism ahead of the Travelers Championship.

Rory McIlroy believes he "found something" during the U.S. Open last week after a difficult couple of months following his triumph at The Masters.

The Northern Irishman completed an emotional career Grand Slam at Augusta National in April but finished in a lowly tie for 47th at the US PGA Championship a month later.

McIlroy then warmed up for the season's third major by missing the cut at the Canadian Open and toiled at times at the hugely difficult Oakmont course during the U.S. Open.

However, he inched inside the top 20 with a three-under-par 67 in his final round and, speaking to the media ahead of this week's Traveler's Championship, McIlroy found plenty of positives.

Speaking ahead of the event at TPC at River Highlands, McIlroy said: " "I don't think it's one shot, it's the repeatability of shots. If I can see something or have a feeling that is very repeatable… I think proof is in the pudding.

"I definitely found a feeling last week, especially off the tee, that was repeatable. That was working well. I led strokes gained off the tee last week which was a big thing for me. I thought I drove the ball well all week last week.

"I think the weeks after major championships sometimes when you're in contention and you're trying to win them, it can feel quite difficult to go play the next week.

"After a week like I had at Oakmont, where you're not quite in the mix but you might feel you find something in your game, you're excited to come back and play."

McIlroy believes it will be a nice change of pace playing at a course that should offer up plenty of birdie opportunities after a gruelling few weeks where players have been "put through the wringer".

"There's a lot of guys in the field this week where this is their fourth tournament in a row. They've been put through the wringer," he added.

"So this is a welcome set-up where they feel like they can relax a bit and not have to grind so much for your score."
