McIlroy receives 'lovely letter' of apology after Ryder Cup fan abuse
The CEO of the PGA of America has reached out to Rory McIlroy following the abuse the Northern Irishman was subjected to at the Ryder Cup.
Rory McIlroy has received a "lovely letter" of apology from PGA of America CEO Derek Sprague over abuse he and his wife Erica suffered at the Ryder Cup.
Masters champion McIlroy was influential in Europe's memorable 15-13 triumph over the United States at Bethpage Black, contributing three-and-a-half points to the team's cause.
However, the event was mired in controversy, with McIlroy and his team-mates heavily heckled by the New York crowd, leading to plenty of flashpoints between the five-time major champion and fans in attendance.
Erica McIlroy was also struck by a drink thrown from the galleries in unsavoury scenes.
McIlroy insists the taunts "galvanised" Europe to a first away win since 2012, while Sprague promised to contact the Northern Irishman – a vow he has now seemingly kept.
Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of competing at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, McIlroy said: "I got a lovely email from Derek Sprague apologising.
We're on our way, @TheAdareManor

"Erica worked with Derek at the PGA of America back in the day so we know Derek and his wife pretty well.
"He couldn't have been more gracious or apologetic and he wrote us a lovely letter, which we really appreciated.
"I take it as a compliment that they targeted me. But then at the same time, it was a tough week. That made us better as a team.
"It galvanised us and it really put our arms around each other."
