McIlroy hails ‘unbelievable effort’ as Europe edge USA to seal Ryder Cup

Team Europe survived a late Team USA fightback to retain the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Sunday, and Rory McIlroy was delighted.

Rory McIlroy has lauded the "unbelievable collective effort" of his team-mates, as Team Europe held off a fierce last-day surge from the United States to clinch the Ryder Cup with a thrilling 15-13 triumph at Bethpage Black.

Luke Donald’s men had dominated all four opening sessions to build a record European lead of 11.5-4.5 going into the final day, needing just 2.5 points to retain the trophy and three to seal overall victory.

Hopes of an easy European victory were swiftly dashed as the Americans launched a spirited comeback, winning five and halving one of the opening seven matches to put Keegan Bradley’s team on course for what could have been the greatest final-day turnaround in Ryder Cup history.

Ludvig Aberg secured Europe’s first point of a tense final day with a 2&1 win over Patrick Cantlay, while Shane Lowry’s clutch birdie on the last hole earned a half point against Russell Henley, guaranteeing Europe would keep hold of the trophy.

McIlroy, who was part of his sixth Ryder Cup winning team, was emotional after clinching the title.

"I'm extremely proud to be a part of this team, extremely proud of every single one," McIlroy said on Sky Sports.

"This was an unbelievable collective effort. As soon as we won in Rome we turned our attention to doing something everyone thought was pretty impossible, not just winning in America but here in New York."

"The response from 2021 defeat: "The comments, what people were saying after Whistling Straits about this decades of dominance, we let that fuel us.

"We got so lucky in getting an incredible leader like Luke Donald, who shepherded us through this - so a lot of the credit has to go to him."

Meanwhile, Team USA captain Bradley spoke candidly to Sky Sports about his team's defeat: "I think I would have set the course up a little different. But I don't know, they played better than us. They deserved to win.

"They're a great team. In my eyes, Luke Donald is the best European Ryder Cup captain of all time."
