McIlroy determined to ‘shift the narrative’ of Ryder Cup victory
Europe pulled off a rare away victory at the Ryder Cup, but Rory McIlroy feels the win is being remembered for the wrong reasons.
Rory McIlroy revealed that he would like to “shift the narrative” of Europe’s Ryder Cup victory after claiming it is being remembered for the “wrong reason”.
The Northern Irishman scored three-and-a-half points in Europe’s 15-13 win at Bethpage Black, but the behaviour of the fans in New York took the headlines away from their rare victory in the United States.
McIlroy was on the receiving end of verbal abuse throughout the event, while his wife Erica was hit by a drink thrown by an American fan, as he labelled the behaviour of the crowd as “unacceptable and abusive”.
Europe held off a late fightback from the United States to retain their title, and McIlroy believes the focus should be on their impressive win rather than the crowd trouble.
“The unfortunate thing is people aren't remembering that [performance] and they are remembering the week for the wrong reason,” said McIlroy.
“I would like to shift the narrative and focus on how good the European team were and how proud I was to be part of that team to win an away Ryder Cup.

Europe’s win in September was McIlroy’s sixth in eight Ryder Cup appearances, and his second on American soil.
Captain Luke Donald backed McIlroy to take on the leadership role in the future, but the latter does not plan to do so anytime soon.
“Certainly not 2027 [at Adare Manor in Ireland],” McIlroy laughed when asked if he would like to lead the side.
“I hope I'm still playing at that point and good enough to put points on the board for Europe. But yeah, I would love to be the European team captain at some point.
“But that will be when I'm not good enough to make the team, or I make way for the new generation to come along.”
