Nuno urges West Ham to ignore Tottenham result and keep focus on the pitch

The relegation battle is going down to the final day, with West Ham needing a win, all the while knowing their fate is out of their hands.

Nuno Espirito Santo says West Ham need to keep their focus on the pitch and not on results elsewhere as they look to retain their Premier League status against Leeds United.

West Ham, who have lost each of their last three matches, sit 18th in the table going into the final day, sitting two points behind Tottenham, who host Everton.

Only a win, coupled with a Spurs loss, will be enough to keep the Hammers in the Premier League and avoid their third relegation from the competition.

Nuno acknowledged that the fans will likely be keeping up to date with what happens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but he does not want the players to get swept up in that, too.

"Everybody's going to be aware of what's happening in the other situations; we can't get away from that," he said.

"What I hope is that our players ignore what’s happening elsewhere and focus on their tasks on the pitch. This is more important than anything.

"Every game in the Premier League is like a cup final, but yes, for sure [this is one of the biggest games of my career]. Everything is going to be decided.

"Right now, there's nothing in our minds other than Sunday. Afterwards, it will be the time to start thinking about that."

Leeds, meanwhile, have been assured of their safety for a couple of weeks and head into Sunday's match 14th in the table, having gone unbeaten in their last eight games (W4 D4).

They still have one last chance to push up the table if they can win at London Stadium, and Daniel Farke is particularly keen to finish the season on a high.

"After a fantastic season for us and so many setbacks, we want, of course, the best possible finish of the season," he said.

"The best possible finish is always a good performance, good result. Each and every position on the table counts, each and every point counts.

"For that, we are also hungry to extend our unbeaten run and also hungry to finish as this group of players also deserve in style, with good performance, and yeah, if possible, also three points. If not, then perhaps one point. But of course, we want to stay unbeaten."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

West Ham – Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen has assisted eight of West Ham's last 12 Premier League goals.

Overall, he has 10 assists in the competition this term, with only three Hammers players registering more in a campaign – Paolo Di Canio in 1999-00 (13), Dimitri Payet in 2015-16 (12) and Eyal Berkovic in 1998-99 (11).

Leeds United – Noah Okafor

Noah Okafor will turn 26 on Sunday. The only Leeds player to score on his birthday in the Premier League is Alf Inge Haaland, who did so against West Ham in November 1997.

No player has ever scored on their birthday in the final match of the season in the competition.

MATCH PREDICTION: WEST HAM WIN

After a 3-1 win in May 2023, West Ham are looking to win consecutive home league games against Leeds for the first time since 1974.

However, Leeds won the reverse fixture 2-1 in October and are now looking to complete the Premier League double over West Ham for the first time since 2002-03, when the Hammers were relegated with a (38-game) competition record of 42 points.

At no side have Leeds won more Premier League away games than their seven against West Ham. However, they lost their last league visit to the London Stadium.

West Ham know anything less than a win will definitely not be good enough, and they have lost just one of their last 19 matches when playing their final league game of the season at home (W11 D7).

Leeds have lost their final Premier League match in just two of their 15 campaigns in the competition (W6 D7), with both defeats coming in seasons in which they were relegated (0-1 v Chelsea in 2003-04, 1-4 v Spurs in 2022-23).
