Northampton 20-28 Bordeaux-Begles: French giants clinch Champions Cup

Bordeaux-Begles won the Champions Cup after a 28-20 victory over Northampton Saints at the Principality Stadium.

Damian Penaud scored two tries as Bordeaux-Begles crushed Northampton Saints' European dream with a 28-20 victory in the Champions Cup final.

Northampton downed four-time champions Leinster to reach Saturday's showpiece match at the Principality Stadium, but they were ultimately outdone by Bordeaux's power in the second half.

Bordeaux scooped their maiden European trophy as Cyril Caseaux crossed for the only try of the second half.

The scores were tied at half-time at 20-20, with both teams giving it as good as they got.

Alex Coles went over at the start and end of the first half for Northampton, with Fin Smith's kicking on point, though they lost George Furbank and Temo Mayanavanua to injuries.

Penaud and Adam Coleman had gone in for Bordeaux, with Matthieu Jalibert converting one of those tries while also kicking a penalty, while Maxime Lucu also added three points for the Top 14 club.

But with Ed Prowse joining Tommy Freeman in the sin-bin for Northampton, Caseaux proved the difference after the break, settling a tight final as he charged in from close range.

Data Debrief: Northampton's wait rolls on

While Bordeaux have claimed the Champions Cup for the first time in their history, Northampton's long wait for glory in the competition rolls on.

Saints won their first, and as it stands, last, Champions Cup title in 2000. They have finished as runners-up for the second time, having previously done so in 2010-11.

Northampton can at least take solace in the fact that they were the first English finalists since 2020, when Exeter Chiefs triumphed.

Penaud was once again a star of the show for Bordeaux, as he rounded out his Champions Cup campaign with 14 tries.
