Norris: Flexi-wings ruling 'changed nothing' for McLaren

The introduction of new rules restricting the use of flexi-wings were predicted to harm McLaren, but Lando Norris says they had no impact.

Lando Norris believes McLaren have proved themselves as the best manufacturer on the Formula One grid this year, saying a new ruling on flexi-wings "changed nothing" at the Spanish Grand Prix.

McLaren converted a front-row lockout into their third one-two of the season in Barcelona on Sunday, with Norris following Oscar Piastri home.

They now boast a huge 197-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors' championship, while Piastri is 10 points ahead of Norris in the drivers' standings.

Ahead of last weekend, the introduction of more stringent tests on front wings led some onlookers to suggest McLaren's advantage over the rest of the grid could be cut.

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said the changes could be a "gamechanger" for the rest of the season, though Piastri said the impact of the changes had been "overhyped".

It was the latter assessment that proved correct as McLaren produced another dominant performance, with only Max Verstappen – who endured a turbulent end to the race and finished 10th after being penalised for causing a collision with George Russell – ever threatening to challenge Piastri and Norris.

"There were a lot of complaints about our car, and they introduced this technical directive and changed nothing," Norris said.

"The team have done a very good job to just give us a good all-round car and the best car on the grid.

"So, we're very proud to be able to go and drive those cars every weekend. It's credit to the team that we have, to give day in and day out."

After a weekend off, the F1 season will resume in Montreal, with the Canadian Grand Prix taking place on June 15.
