Oscar Piastri has refused to take a more ruthless approach in the title race for the Formula One Drivers' Championship.

The McLaren driver currently leads team-mate Lando Norris by 31 points in the drivers' standings with eight races left in the F1 calendar remaining.

Norris reduced that lead after finishing second in the Italian Grand Prix, one place ahead of Piastri, but not without controversy.

Piastri was briefly running in second after a slow pit stop from Norris allowed the Australian driver to pass by, but he was told to give the position back by his team.

Despite showing initial frustration, Piastri acknowledged that it was the fair decision to make as he looks to put McLaren's success above his own.

When asked about a more ruthless approach in the final races, Piastri told ESPN: "Not at the cost of future success. Definitely not.

"We have had very good discussions this week about what went on and what can be made clearer, what can be improved.

"I think in the moment, obviously, I questioned it on the radio as racing drivers often do and as we get encouraged to do.

"But I think, for me, once I had the second request, for me at that point I'm always going to respect that call.

"That's always kind of a learning process, I guess. But yeah, ultimately I know that the team would have my best interests at heart.

"And ultimately, I want to protect that because I can't have my own success without the team having success. So protecting that is a very important thing for me."
