McLaren CEO Brown: Piastri and Norris collision 'inevitable'

With Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri leading the way in the Formula One standings, McLaren CEO Zak Brown is expecting some close calls.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes it is "inevitable" that drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will collide at some point this season as the pair bid for the Formula One title.

After five races, Piastri leads the standings by 10 points to Norris, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen in third and Mercedes' George Russell one place further back.

Piastri has won three races to Norris' one this season, with the Australian putting together back-to-back victories at the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Should he win at the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, the 24-year-old will become the 22nd different driver to win three races in a row in F1 history.

But this track also has significance to Norris, with the McLaren driver picking up his maiden triumph in the competition at the Miami International Autodrome last year.

McLaren have built on last year's constructors' title win, and should they emerge victorious in Miami, it would equal their best start after six races (also five wins from six in 1998).

The number one driver role has been a topic of conversation for some time at McLaren, with the team favouring Norris over Piastri last year in his bid to challenge Verstappen.

However, they have since decided that their drivers are free to race.

And though there have not been any major incidents between Norris and Piastri, Brown believes it is only a matter of time before the pair clash out on the track.

"I think it's definitely a matter of when, rather than if," Brown told Sky Sports ahead of this weekend's Miami Grand Prix.

"You have two racing drivers, whether in the same team or a different team, that are next to each other for 24 races, someone's going to lock a brake.

"So I'm kind of looking forward to getting it over with because I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as exciting as everybody thinks.

"I think it will be a racing incident when that day comes. I think it's inevitable.

"They're two great characters. Neither of them are hotheads, so we're not worried about it, and to a certain extent, kind of looking forward to just getting it out of the way."
