'We will try whatever we can' – Verstappen not giving up on F1 title

Max Verstappen is hopeful of a late surge for the drivers' championship following a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen says he and Red Bull will "try until the end" to fight for the drivers' championship after a dominant victory at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Dutchman's win in Austin cut the gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri to 40 points, with second-placed Lando Norris now firmly in his sights.

Verstappen, who started in pole position, led from start to finish in Austin, marking the 17th time he has done so in a grand Prix and the third time this season, following similar dominant wins in Emilia-Romagna and Azerbaijan.

Only in 2021 (four) and 2023 (five) has he managed to achieve this feat in more different grands prix within a single season.

Despite trailing the McLaren duo in the standings with five races to go, Verstappen remains hopeful of a late surge for a fifth consecutive drivers' title.

"Yeah for sure, the chance is there," he said. "We just need to try and deliver these weekends until the end.

"We will try whatever we can. It's exciting, and I'm very excited until the end."

Verstappen acknowledged he did not foresee the race being that comfortable, despite his glowing record in the United States, where he has now won a record seven times.

"Yeah, it was an unbelievable weekend for us," Verstappen added. "I knew that the race was not going to be super straightforward.

"I think, if you look at the whole race, the pace between myself and Lando was really close.

"I think on the first stint is where we made the difference. I could eek out a little bit of a gap and that is basically what we kept until the end.

"It wasn’t easy also to manage the tyres on both of the stints, but we kept it in the lead. Incredibly proud of everyone to deliver a weekend like this."

Indeed, Sunday's victory marked Verstappen's 68th Formula One victory, and his fifth of the season.

The Red Bull driver has now won three of the last four races, as many victories as he had managed across the previous 18.

His first-place finish in Austin also saw him claim the 122nd podium of his F1 career, equalling Sebastian Vettel's third-best record in the competition (122).
