Norris boosts title hopes with sprint victory in Brazil as Piastri crashes out

Lando Norris extended his championship lead to nine points after winning the sprint race in Brazil on a day to forget for Oscar Piastri.

Lando Norris increased his lead in the Drivers' Championship to nine points after winning the sprint at the Brazilian Grand Prix in a race that saw title rival Oscar Piastri crash out.

It is another dent in Piastri's own title hopes, with the McLaren driver spinning into the barriers at turn three on lap six as his wretched run of recent form continued in Sao Paulo.

Having qualified for the race in fourth, Piastri started strongly as he looked to edge closer to the Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in the podium places.

But the Australian touched his left-front wheel on the inside kerb, with water splashing up and sending the McLaren around into the tyre barriers and was unable to continue the race.

Shortly after his incident, Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto crashed in the same spot, forcing a 22-minute red flag, with the race resuming with a rolling start.

Norris was put immediately under pressure by Antonelli and Russell, who had both elected to restart on the medium tyres while the McLaren was on the soft.

Antonelli came close to becoming the second-youngest winner in any race format in Formula One, but a late yellow flag for home hope Gabriel Bortoleto saw those hopes ended.

The race ended just after Sauber's Bortoleto had a high-speed crash in his Sauber at the end of the pit straight, with Norris taking the chequered flag for a huge victory.

Antonelli and Russell completed the top three, while fellow championship hopeful Max Verstappen crossed the line in fourth, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc had endured a race-long battle with the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso and got past the Spaniard late on, something team-mate Lewis Hamilton was unable to do.

Alonso and Hamilton finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while the Alpine of Pierre Gasly picked up the final point, finishing just ahead of Lance Stroll and Isack Hadjar.

Data Debrief: Norris delivers with the pressure on

After taking pole for the sprint, Norris underplayed its magnitude, but he was able to deliver a strong drive here to put himself in control ahead of qualifying for Sunday's race.

Indeed, Norris became the first driver at the Interlagos Circuit to start on pole and win the race in Sao Paulo, and he will be keen to carry that momentum into the Grand Prix.

Norris has been on the podium 16 times in 2025. If he finishes in the top three again, the Briton will become only the fifth driver in F1 history to finish on the podium at least 17 times in a single season, joining Hamilton (five times), Verstappen (three times), Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher (once each).
