McLaren must review Norris-Piastri incident to retain drivers' trust, says Stella

Andrea Stella says McLaren must retain the trust of their drivers following a collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in Singapore.

McLaren must conduct a review of Lando Norris' collision with Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix to ensure the drivers retain "trust" in the team, says Andrea Stella.

McLaren sealed a second straight constructors' championship on Sunday, while Piastri and Norris are still battling it out for the drivers' title.

Piastri holds a 22-point advantage over Norris with six races remaining this season, after they finished fourth and third, respectively, at Marina Bay.

The celebrations for the team title were soured, though, when Norris made contact with Piastri as he passed the Australian on the first lap.

Piastri said over team radio, "that wasn't very team-like, but sure," before adding, "Are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way?"

McLaren neglected to enforce a position swap later in the race, saying Norris was taking evasive action to avoid Max Verstappen, in a decision Piastri later described as unfair.

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown put the incident down to "hard racing", but team principal Stella says the collision must be analysed in great depth.

"Our review needs to be very detailed, very analytical," Stella told Sky Sports.

"It needs to take into account the point of view of our two drivers and then we will form a common opinion. We will see whether we can just confirm our initial interpretation or there's something else that we should conclude."

Asked for his opinion on Norris' move, which came on the third turn, Stella said: "In terms of going for the gap, I think it's just a bit too much of a coarse approach.

"We need to retain a higher degree of sophistication and detail because there are so many elements that you need to take into account.

"We need to make sure that we don't become too quick in drawing conclusions, we need to be accurate because there's a lot at stake.

"It's not only the championship points but it's also the trust of our drivers in the way we operate as a team and this, if anything, is more foundational than the points themselves.

"So, we will apply all the accuracy that is required in this case and all the conversations that are needed."

The F1 season resumes at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 19, with the Mexico City Grand Prix taking place the following week.
