'He's back on the pace' – Vasseur optimistic over Hamilton's Ferrari future

Lewis Hamilton put on a strong showing at the Italian Grand Prix, much to the pleasure of Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur believes Lewis Hamilton's positive weekend at the Italian Grand Prix will help him kick on for the rest of the 2025 season.

Hamilton started from 10th in his first race as a Ferrari driver at Monza, but managed to manoeuvre his way up to sixth before the chequered flag.

The British driver has had a tough time of things before the summer break, calling himself "useless" and even suggesting Ferrari should look to replace him.

Hamilton's best finish for Ferrari is fourth this season, a position he has crossed the line in three times in Imola, Austria and Silverstone, but he did claim his first win since his blockbuster move from Mercedes in the sprint race in China.

The Formula One calendar restarts on September 21 in Baku, with Hamilton knowing a win will see him become the first driver in the history of the sport to reach 5,000 points.

Only Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who won the Italian Grand Prix last time out, has averaged more points per grand prix (14.46) than the seven-time world champion (13.39).

But Hamilton's inconsistency in 2025 sees him light years away from McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the Drivers' Championship standings.

The 40-year-old is sixth, 46 points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, who has contributed to all five of Ferrari's podiums this season.

However, Vasseur believes Hamilton's strong performance on the track, combined with the support from Tifosi, will help motivate him for the final eight races of the year.

"Honestly, I think this started in Zandvoort last week," said Vasseur.

"It's difficult to say because the outcome of the weekend was not positive for him, but at the end of the day, the pace was better from the beginning compared to Charles, that the mood was better.

"And I think the energy that he received from the Tifosi Wednesday, Thursday in Milano was something very special for him. I don't know if it was expected from him or I don't know what he was expecting from this, but it was something mega.

"I think this gave him an extra boost all over the weekend.

"For sure, we had to serve the penalty and we knew from the beginning of the weekend that with plus five it's not an easy one, but he came back behind [George] Russell and the pace was there from the first lap of FP1 to the last lap of the race.

"He's back on the pace. He had a good weekend, a good mood, good approach and I think it will help [for the rest of the season]."
