'A choice between Yuki and Liam' - Horner still to decide on Perez's Red Bull replacement

Christian Horner will pick between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda to come in for Sergio Perez at Red Bull for the 2025 Formula One season.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says no decision has been made over which of Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda will replace Sergio Perez as Red Bull's second driver.

Perez announced his departure from the team on Wednesday morning after a disappointing 2024 season, with the Mexican finishing eighth in the drivers' championship.

During his time with Red Bull, Perez won five races, claimed three pole positions and collected 29 podium finishes, while also amassing 932 points in total.

But despite signing a two-year contract in June, Red Bull and Perez reached an agreement to part ways ahead of the 2025 Formula One season.

Lawson and Tsunoda both drive for Red Bull's junior team RB and are vying for the slot, with the Japanese driving for the team at post-season testing in Abu Dhabi last week.

"We have all the information that we need. Essentially, it will be a choice between Yuki and Liam. Both have got strong credentials," Horner told Sky Sports.

"We tested Yuki recently at the tyre test in Abu Dhabi to give him a chance to work with the engineering team.

"Liam has done a lot of testing with us behind the scenes this year as well and has driven very well in the six or seven races that he's had.

"We're just looking at and considering all of that, speaking with the engineering team as well, and we'll come to a conclusion in the coming days."

Perez leaves Red Bull having scored just 49 points across the final 18 races of the 2024 season and finishing 285 points behind Verstappen.

During his time with Red Bull, the Mexican won five races, claimed three pole positions and collected 29 podium finishes, while also amassing 932 points in total.

However, four of Perez's 37 F1 retirements came this season. Only in 2012 (six) had he suffered more in one year in the competition (also four in 2014).

Subsequently, Red Bull missed out on the constructors' title, and Horner is intent on his new selection providing a legitimate challenge to Verstappen ahead of what looks a hugely competitive 2025 field.

"We're going to have a Hamilton-Leclerc line-up [at Ferrari] next year. We've already seen Norris-Piastri [at McLaren], what that is capable of," Horner began.

"George Russell with another newcomer in Antonelli [at Mercedes]. What is the best line-up that we can field at Red Bull Racing?

"The most important thing for us next year, in what will be arguably the tightest season in F1 for many, many years, is to make sure that we have two drivers that are performing."
