Van der Sar believes Antony deserves another chance at Man Utd
Antony is attracting interest after his fine loan spell at Real Betis, but Edwin Van der Sar wants him to stay at Manchester United.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes Antony deserves another chance under Ruben Amorim after his loan spell with Real Betis.
Antony made a bright start to his Red Devils career, scoring in each of his first three Premier League games for United following his big-money move from Ajax in 2022.
But the Brazilian, who made the move to Old Trafford in a reported £86m transfer, failed to build on his fast start as he struggled for game time under Erik ten Hag.
Across all competitions, Antony managed just 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances, and was sent out on loan to LaLiga side Betis for the second-half of last season.
He went on to shine under Manuel Pellegrini, netting nine goals and registering five assists in all competitions as Betis reached the Europa Conference League final.
Betis have expressed their interest in making the move for Antony permanent, while Bayer Leverkusen, now managed by Ten Hag, have also been linked with a move.
But Van der Sar believes that Antony is deserving of a second shot with the Red Devils next season as they look to improve on their poor 2024-25 campaign.
"Luckily, I'm not in a position anymore to dictate at a club which kind of players have to come," Van der Sar said.
"But they're on the right track by signing a more experienced striker, maybe with another one on the way.
"The two players they signed in the winter break were good, so they should be fine if they give faith to the manager.
"Maybe [Alejandro] Garnacho's going to go, I would say bring Antony back, but I'm not sure if that's realistic."
