West Indies edge Bangladesh in thrilling Super Over to level series

West Indies levelled their three-match ODI Test series with a Super Over victory to clinch a dramatic win over Bangladesh.

West Indies narrowly defeated Bangladesh by one run in a dramatic Super Over in Dhaka, levelling the three-match ODI series 1-1.

Akeal Hosein's final over was far from perfect, with several wides and no-balls, but he managed to contain Bangladesh to just nine runs, as Saif Hassan, Soumya Sarkar, and Najmul Hossain Shanto were unable to secure victory.

West Indies had set the target with 10 runs of their own in the Super Over, Shai Hope (seven) hitting a boundary off the last delivery after Mustafizur Rahman had dismissed Sherfane Rutherford with his second ball.

The match marked Bangladesh's first-ever tie in men's international cricket, in their 813th game, after they posted 213-7, led by Sarkar's 45 and Rishad Hossain's strong finish with 39.

Hope had been instrumental for the West Indies in the chase, scoring the game's only half-century (53) and guiding them close to their target of 214.

In the tense closing moments, West Indies needed five runs from the final over. Saif Hassan bowled two dot balls before conceding a single, putting Hope back on strike. Choosing another quick single left number 10, Hosein, vulnerable, and Saif bowled him through the legs.

On the last ball, Khary Pierre needed three runs but top-edged to square leg. Wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan dropped the catch and failed to get the ball to Mustafizur in time, allowing Hope and Pierre to complete two runs, tie the match, and send it to a Super Over.

Data Debrief: Bangladesh secure historic first tie

The result handed Bangladesh their first-ever tie in men's international cricket, something that had been a long time coming.

The hosts have failed to win an ODI series for 18 months, and have won just one of their last 10 series in the format, with that win coming against Sri Lanka in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Windies remain on course to claim their fourth ODI Test victory in six series outings – which will symbolise their best run of results in the format since 2007-08.
