Embiid: England will 'choke again' at 2026 World Cup

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid took the time to discuss the 2026 football World Cup while previewing the upcoming NBA season.

NBA superstar Joel Embiid believes England will "choke again" when he was questioned about their chances at next year's World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Embiid, of the Philadelphia 76ers, was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2023.

And as he previewed NBA's return later this month, Embiid also discussed FIFA's showpiece international tournament.

The 31-year-old, who is a fan of both Real Madrid and Arsenal, believes England have the best team in the world, but doubts the Three Lions' big-moment mentality.

"Obviously, I am a big football fan, so I am excited," he said.

"I want to go to as many games as possible. France has had the best team, I think Spain have a chance.

"England are going to choke again. It happens every single time. They have got the best team, technically the best team.

"I am a big football fan, I watch every single game. As far as talent goes [England are the best]."

Embiid featured just 19 times last season, and looks set to miss the start of the new NBA season as he recovers from injury.

In what will be his 10th season turning out for the 76ers, Embiid will be aiming for a more fortuitous time with his fitness once he does return to the court. Philadelphia failed to fire without him last term, as they finished 13th in the Eastern Conference.

"I think the encouraging things are some of the stuff that he's [Embiid] said that he looks good, right? He's feeling pretty good," 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said.

"He's got some boxes to tick to get, you know, keep it going, but it looks more encouraging.

"You know, I think he said he feels a lot better this year at this time of year than he did a year ago. So, that's got to be a positive step in the right direction. We’re looking forward to getting him back with the group."
