Bayern must carry momentum against Madrid into second leg, says Kompany
Bayern Munich lead Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final tie, but Vincent Kompany does not want to rest on his laurels.
Vincent Kompany has urged his Bayern Munich side to "continue our momentum" into their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid.
Bayern won 2-1 in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, with goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane leading them to victory despite Kylian Mbappe halving the deficit late on.
Kane has now scored or assisted in four consecutive Champions League appearances against Madrid (two goals, two assists), the joint-longest run by a player against them in the competition (also four by Giovane Elber in 2002 and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2017).
Bayern, however, could have created a bigger first-leg advantage, producing 3.0 xG from 20 shots in Madrid.
Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry missed golden opportunities to score in the first half, while Diaz failed to capitalise on the counter late on.
Nevertheless, after achieving victory on the road, Kompany insisted Bayern must maintain their standards in the second leg next week.
"It's important to continue our momentum. They [Madrid] will give us a tough game, they are the type of team that can do something special, but so can we," said Kompany.
"We have earned the right to be confident and be demanding in those games. But it's football, you never know.
"I'm not centre stages, it's the players. So I just try to give them a little word when I can, [like] something I might have done when I was playing. But it's a player's game."

Manuel Neuer was named player of the match in the first leg, with the Bayern goalkeeper making nine saves in the Spanish capital.
Kompany believes those types of displays are crucial if Bayern are to win the Champions League this season.
"He makes it look so easy. With great goalkeepers, they make incredible saves at incredible angles look so easy," added Kompany.
"He is still very good with his positioning, defending the back line.
"We won't win the competition without more of these kind of performances."
