McTominay 'wanted to prove Man Utd wrong' at Napoli, says Robertson

Scott McTominay enjoyed a dream debut season with Napoli, lifting the Serie A title and being named the division's Most Valuable Player.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson believes Scott McTominay's Scudetto-winning season with Napoli was powered by aiming to "prove Manchester United wrong".

McTominay made the move to Naples last summer in a reported £25million transfer after spending seven years in and out of United's starting line-up.

The 28-year-old made 255 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing eight assists before making the switch to Serie A.

And McTominay has taken the Italian top-flight by storm, registering 16 goal involvements (12 goals, four assists) in 34 appearances in his debut season under Antonio Conte.

Indeed, only Hernanes in 2010-11 (also 16) has been involved in as many goals in his first season in Serie A in the last 20 editions of the competition.

Since the beginning of the 2000s, no Scottish midfielder has scored more goals in a single season in the top five European leagues than McTominay's 12, the same number that Charlie Adam managed in the Premier League in 2010-11.

McTominay's final goal of the season came in Napoli's 2-0 win over Cagliari, a game that won them the Scudetto for the fourth time. He was also named the league's Most Valuable Player for his performances.

And while McTominay's career has gone on an upward trajectory, the same cannot be said for United, who endured an underwhelming campaign across all competitions.

The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League, their worst league finish since 1973-74, when they were last relegated from the top-flight.

United were also beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham, bringing up their 20th defeat in all competitions, their most in a campaign since losing 22 in 1973-74.

And Robertson, who is preparing for Scotland's upcoming friendlies with Iceland and Liechtenstein, believes McTominay made the right choice by leaving Old Trafford.

"I think he went over there with a point to prove," Liverpool defender Robertson said, per The Guardian.

"I think he wanted to prove Manchester United wrong and prove people in the Premier League wrong. He has gone over there and done that pretty successfully.

"That's credit to him, credit to his attitude and his determination to be the best version of himself. Now he is a king over there.

"At Man United, he probably lacked getting that run of games consistently; he was in and out and things like that. He probably didn't get the respect he deserves.

"Then he goes over there, puts in a magnificent season and fair play to him to end it with the league title.

"Even before he was at Napoli, his standards for Scotland were unbelievable. He's getting better and better, he has taken it to a whole new level."
