Marsh stars as Australia beat India in rain-delayed ODI opener

Australia defied the rain in Perth to halt India's eight-match winning streak, with Mitchell Marsh starring for the hosts.

Mitchell Marsh played a starring role as Australia beat India by seven wickets in a rain-affected first ODI in Perth.

The Australia captain hit an unbeaten 46 to help the hosts prevail via the DLS method.

A damp day at Optus Stadium saw the match reduced to 26 overs per side, with India batting first in their bid for a ninth straight victory.

Despite the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma (eight), Virat Kohli (duck) and Shubman Gill (10), KL Rahul (38 off 31 deliveries) and Axar Patel (31 from 38) steadied the ship for the tourists, who eventually finished at 136-9.

Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Owen and Matthew Kuhnemann took two wickets apiece for Australia, but India started the defence of their target well.

Arshdeep Singh (1-31) claimed Travis Head (eight) in just the second over, while Matthew Short (eight) went in the eighth to leave Australia at 44-2.

However, Marsh stood his ground and – with the help of Josh Philippe (37) and Matt Renshaw (21 not out) – eventually got the hosts to their adjusted target of 131 with 29 balls to spare.

Data Debrief: Rohit matches Tendulkar and Kohli

Australia have now won their last four men's ODIs against India in Perth.

India saw their eight-game winning streak in men's ODIs brought to an end, while they have lost four of their last six bilateral ODI series played away from home.

It ensured defeat in Gill's first ODI as skipper, as he became the ninth captain to lose his first match in all three formats in men's internationals.

On a brighter note for India, Rohit played his 500th international match, becoming only the fifth player to reach the milestone after Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid.
