Lions' Graham 'devastated' as injury follows debut try

Darcy Graham's first outing for the British and Irish Lions ended in tears, as he suffered an ankle injury shortly after scoring a try.

Darcy Graham was "devastated" as an ankle injury forced him off five minutes after scoring on his British and Irish Lions debut, in Tuesday's nervy win over a First Nations & Pasifika XV.

The Lions landed their seventh straight victory since heading to Australia, with head coach Andy Farrell making wholesale changes to the team that won last Saturday's first Test against Australia 27-19.

Farrell's son Owen captained the tourists at Marvel Stadium, where they ran out 24-19 winners after holding off a late rally from their opponents.

The Lions' strong start proved decisive, with Jamie Osborne and Graham both going over in the first 11 minutes.

However, just five minutes after crossing, Scotland wing Graham suffered an ankle injury and left the pitch in tears, to be replaced by Garry Ringrose.

Asked about Graham's injury after the game, Andy Farrell told Sky Sports: "It's so upsetting. He was so upset. You could see how much it meant to him hobbling off.

"He's got a Lions cap, he's played for the British and Irish Lions and scored a try. He'll remember that forever.

"He's devastated. To become a Lion and score a try, he should be proud of himself."

Graham was one of 10 late call-ups to be included in the Lions' starting lineup, and Andy Farrell claims several new faces made a case to be included for the second Test against the Wallabies, which takes place in Melbourne on Saturday.

"I'm delighted for the lads who got their first games and caps," he said.

"Congrats to them. They talked about in the week how much it meant to them and how much of a special occasion it was for them, and they certainly played like that.

"We were a bit messy in terms of breakdowns and penalties. In the end, I was so pleased for these guys. For some of them, it might be their last game on tour.

"There were some great performances by some individuals. I thought Ben White was very good, Jamie Osborne obviously and those playing their first matches. I'm delighted for them.

"There's always food for thought. We'll do what we always do, we'll review this game and select the side tomorrow evening."

Owen Farrell was one of the tourists' outstanding performers, having previously appeared off the bench against an AUNZ Invitational XV in Adelaide.

The former England skipper is not giving much consideration to his hopes of gatecrashing the team to face the Wallabies, telling Sky Sports: "We'll see.

"We'll enjoy this first, then recover so we can get stuck into our preparations for Saturday. We'll see what happens!"
