Zverev holds off Navone to reach third round at Madrid Open
Alexander Zverev needed three sets to defeat Mariano Navone at the Madrid Open, with Daniil Medvedev also reaching the third round in Spain.
Alexander Zverev reached the third round at the Madrid Open with a three-set victory over Mariano Navone.
The second seed won 6-1 3-6 6-3 in an hour and 44 minutes and will face Terence Atmane in the next round of the competition.
The first set was straightforward for Zverev, who converted two of his three break-point opportunities to take the lead.
However, Navone found his rhythm in the second and broke Zverev's twice on his way to a 5-1 lead, though the Argentinian dropped one service before taking the set.
Zverev was back to his best in the third, with one break of serve enough for the German to clinch victory, which he did with his second match point.

Data Debrief: Zverev reaches 175 Masters 1000 wins
Zverev has now won his last 10 opening matches at ATP Masters 1000 events, with his last such defeat coming to Matteo Berrettini in Monte Carlo last season.
He also claimed his 175th career match win at ATP Masters 1000 events, becoming the ninth player to achieve the feat since the format’s introduction in 1990.
Meanwhile, Zverev is one of only two players born since the start of 1990 to have claimed more ATP Masters 1000 match wins than Medvedev (128), along with Grigor Dimitrov (157).
