Reports: Thunder’s Gilgeous-Alexander to repeat as NBA’s MVP

SGA's dominant run of awards and recognition continued as he became the league's 14th player to repeat as MVP

Oklahoma City Thunder star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to win his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award, ESPN’s Shams Sharania reported on Sunday.

The winner will be officially announced later Sunday, during a segment on Amazon Prime Video shortly after 7:30 p.m. EDT, with Gilgeous-Alexander expected to beat out fellow finalists Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama.

Gilgeous-Alexander will join elite company by being voted MVP in back-to-back years. He will become the 14th player in league history to receive MVP honours in consecutive seasons, with Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry and LeBron James the most recent players to achieve the feat.

James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar repeated as MVP on two separate occasions.

Only Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell have been named MVP in three straight seasons.

Gilgeous-Alexander will add to his rapidly growing trophy collection after another dazzling statistical season while leading the defending champion Thunder to an NBA-best 64-18 record.

Gilgeous-Alexander was second in the league in scoring this season, averaging 31.1 points on 55.3% shooting from the floor and 38.6% efficiency from 3-point range. He also made an NBA-leading 540 free throws this season while shooting 87.9% from the foul line.

After a dominant regular season, Gilgeous-Alexander has led Oklahoma City to an 8-0 start in the playoffs as they prepare for Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Monday.

As the postseason continues, Gilgeous-Alexander will have the chance to join an even smaller list of players who won league MVP, Finals MVP and a championship in back-to-back seasons.

Only Jordan (1991-92) and James (2012-13) have swept the league’s most prestigious awards in consecutive seasons.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s second coronation will also officially extend the streak of international players being honored as the NBA’s best. No player born in the United States has won MVP since James Harden in 2018.
