Masai Ujiri out as president of Raptors

Ujiri headed basketball operations for 13 seasons and led Toronto to the 2019 NBA championship

The Toronto Raptors have parted ways with president and vice chairman Masai Ujiri, the club announced Friday.

Ujiri’s lauded 13-year tenure as the team’s head of basketball operations comes a day after the conclusion of the NBA Draft and with the free agent signing window opening on Monday.

Ujiri orchestrated the trade for Kawhi Leonard, helping the Raptors win the franchise’s only NBA title in 2019.

Ujiri was entering the final year of his contract. The Raptors will also undergo an ownership change over the next year, with Rogers Communications taking controlling interest from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Toronto is expected to conduct a full search immediately for a new president of basketball operations.

The team announced that general manager Bobby Webster was given a contract extension and will continue to work with ownership on roster decisions in the meantime.

Ujiri was hired as Toronto’s general manager in 2013, and the Raptors made the playoffs in his first seven seasons. However, they missed the post-season in four of the last five years and were a combined 55-109 over the last two campaigns.

This offseason appears to be a pivotal one for Toronto, who have a talented roster that has equalled less than the sum of its parts.

The Raptors, who selected Collin Murray-Boyles with the ninth overall draft pick on Wednesday, are not projected to be active in free agency but had been rumoured to be open for trades.

Scottie Barnes remains the team’s centrepiece, but there is a collection of high-priced veterans.

Mid-season acquisition Brandon Ingram, who has yet to make his Toronto debut, is owed about $120million over the next three seasons, while Immanuel Quickley will make $130million over the next four seasons.

R.J. Barrett and Jakob Poeltl are both on shorter deals but carry a combined cap hit of $47.2million for the upcoming season.
