'I deserved this last week' – Shanghai victor Piastri proud of response to home heartbreak
A slip-up in the wet cost Oscar Piastri in Australia last weekend, but he responded with an emphatic victory at Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri feels he deserved his Chinese Grand Prix triumph after enduring home heartbreak in Australia one week earlier.
Piastri qualified in second for the season-opening event in Melbourne last week, but skidded off the track in wet conditions and was unable to recover as he finished down in ninth.
He responded in emphatic fashion at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday, producing a controlled drive from pole as he led Lando Norris in a McLaren one-two.
It was Piastri's third race victory in Formula One, having also triumphed in Hungary and Azerbaijan last year. He is the 70th driver to reach that mark in F1 history.
He also became the first Australian to win a race from pole since Daniel Ricciardo at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix, and he believes the victory was payback for last week.
"It's been an incredible weekend from start to finish, the car has been pretty mega the whole time," Piastri told Sky Sports.
"I think today was a bit of a surprise with how the tyres behaved, but I'm super proud, and I got what I feel like I deserved from last week.
"I'm extremely happy and the team did a mega job, a one-two. Obviously, I'm very happy."

Norris clung on to second despite a late challenge from George Russell, having been instructed over team radio to limit his brake use after suffering from pedal issues.
"It's scary, it is like my worst nightmare, brakes failing. I was losing two, three, four seconds on the last couple of laps so I was a bit scared," Norris said.
"We survived and made it to the end. I would have liked to give it a bit of a try and put Oscar under a bit of pressure, but not today. We're satisfied, it's a great result and we'll go again next time."
Norris continues to lead the drivers' championship standings with 44 points, putting him eight clear of four-time defending champion Max Verstappen.
McLaren are also 21 points ahead of Mercedes in the constructors' championship, with the Silver Arrows' tally being boosted when Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified, bumping Kimi Antonelli from eighth to sixth.
Norris added: "It's going to be exciting for all of us. It's tough but I'm still feeling good.
"With how bad the car was [on Saturday] and the day before, I felt a good few steps behind [Piastri] in terms of driving and car balance.
"The pace difference just shows when a car suits you compared to not. I felt very confident today, it was a positive for us, in terms of learning.
"I've been driving a McLaren for six or seven years, this weekend was a completely new one for me and I had to change a lot of things, so I'm glad that I got some answers."
The next event of the 2025 F1 campaign, the Japanese Grand Prix, kicks off a run of three races in three weeks on April 6.
