'Hurt' Australia looking for improved display against Italy, says Wilson

Harry Wilson hopes to see improvements in certain aspects of Australia's performance after their defeat to England, as they face Italy.

Australia's number eight Harry Wilson hopes his side can overcome the disappointment of losing to England last week with an improved performance against Italy.

The Wallabies held off England for much of the first half, only going behind by a deficit of three points at 10-7 at the interval, but they did not score a point in the second half as the home side eventually cruised to a 25-7 win.

Luke Cowan Dickie's late try clinched the result and Wilson admits that the nature of it, a rolling maul from outside the 22 metre line, left the Australians disappointed given their defensive record in that aspect of the game.

“Our rolling maul and attack and defence has honestly probably been one of our major strengths this year, we've scored a lot of tries and we haven't let in a single try until the weekend which was really disappointing,” he said.

“It definitely hurt us as a forward pack but we've learned from it, we're going to keep improving and we want to go out there and put them under pressure in the ruling mall and both sides of the ball because we do believe it's a strength of ours.”

The Australians have been training in Udine, a city of less than 100,000, and the 25-year-old says the calm and quiet surroundings have helped the squad to bond even further.

“It's a really old sort of town or city and we've really enjoyed it," Wilson told reporters.

“There’s been a lot of time for us all to connect. No one's really got mates here, no one's really done too much travelling, so we've all just stayed together and just built on the connections we've built over the last four or five months.

“We’ve really enjoyed our week here and we're really excited for this weekend.”

Australia face Ireland and France to round off their autumn internationals, and Wilson hopes a strong display against Italy can act as a springboard for their matches against two of the top-five ranked teams in the world.

“We need to go out there and put a good performance in this weekend,” the number eight said.

“This year's been a lot of up and downs, we want to get back on the tracks and heading in the right direction and putting a strong performance in this weekend will be the start of that for us,

“We’re very motivated to do that and we've got a lot of belief in this group that we can do that so there's a lot of excitement building in this group for tomorrow night.”
