Hazlewood, Kumar run riot and Kohli makes history as Challengers blow Capitals away

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood were the stars of the show during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's thrashing of Delhi Capitals.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru kept up the pressure on Indian Super League leaders Punjab Kings thanks to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood starred with the ball in hand to skittle Delhi out for just 75 as the Challengers needed just six overs to reach their target.

Delhi were reeling at 7-4 just 13 balls into their innings, with debutant Sahil Parakh dismissed by Kumar (3-5) for a two-ball duck to get things rolling for the Challengers.

KL Rahul (1) and Sameer Rizvi (0) were then removed in the same over by Hazlewood (4-12) before Kumar returned to send Tristan Stubbs (5) on his way.

By the end of the fourth over, Delhi had lost six wickets and both Hazlewood and Kumar had three apiece after Axar Patel (0) and Nitish Rana (1) fell, though Abishek Porel (30) and David Miller (19) were able to momentarily halt the barrage.

However, they were only able to delay the inevitable, with Porel bowled out by Hazlewood as the Challengers looked to wrap things up early on.

Jacob Bethell reached 20 from 11 deliveries before he was caught by Thangarasu Natarajan off a delivery from Kyle Jamieson (1-42), but that was as good as things got for Delhi.

Virat Kohli (23 not out) and Devdutt Padikkal (34 n.o) eased the Challengers to victory, moving them to within one point of the summit ahead of Punjab's clash with the Rajasthan Royals.

Data Debrief: Kohli makes more IPL history

In a rip-roaring start, which saw Delhi produce the lowest powerplay score in the history of the IPL (13), the Challengers looked on course to restrict their opponents to the lowest ever innings total in the competition, which was 49, set in April 2017 by Bengaluru themselves.

A 37-run partnership between Miller and Porel helped Delhi avoid that unwanted record, though it was a Challengers batter in Kohli who reached yet another milestone.

Kohli plundered back-to-back sixes off Natarajan to get the job done for his team, and in doing so, became the first batter in IPL history to surpass 9,000 runs, which puts him 1,829 clear of Rohit Sharma (7,183) in the all-time scoring list.
