Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery on the hamstring injury he sustained during Girona's defeat to Real Oviedo last week, his loan club have confirmed.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan last month after losing his status as Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper to Joan Garcia, who arrived from Espanyol for €25m last June.

The German – who still harbours hopes of playing at the World Cup later this year – only made one appearance for Barcelona this season, in a Copa del Rey win over Guadalajara in December, but has started each of Girona's last two matches.

He suffered a left thigh injury against Oviedo last time out and it was initially feared that his loan stint would have to be cut short.

However, given Girona did not move to add another goalkeeper before Monday's transfer deadline, it is now hoped Ter Stegen may return to action within the next two months.

In a statement posted to their social media channels on Wednesday, Girona said: "Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery this Friday for the injury he suffered to the hamstring of his left leg during the match against Real Oviedo. 

"The recovery time will be determined after the procedure."

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach, winning six LaLiga titles during his time at the club and lifting the Champions League trophy in his debut campaign.

Since joining the Blaugrana ahead of the 2014-15 season, only Jan Oblak (183) has kept more clean sheets in the Spanish top flight than Ter Stegen (128 in 293 games), while the Germany goalkeeper also ranks third for saves during that time (731).
