Gauff recovers top form to defeat Jeanjean in Madrid
Third seed Coco Gauff overcame a nervy first set to bagel and defeat Leolia Jeanjean in straight straights at the Madrid Open.
Coco Gauff booked her spot in the third round of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets win over Leolia Jeanjean.
The American won 6-3 6-0 in an hour and 23 minutes to set up a third-round clash with Sorana Cirstea in the Spanish capital.
Despite what the score might suggest, it was far from straightforward in the first set for Gauff, as the third seed saw her serve broken twice early on.
However, Gauff converted four break points of her own, including one in the ninth game to clinch the first.
The third seed's quality then came to the fore in the second, where she raced to a 5-0 lead while conceding just four points on serve.
Gauff clinched victory with her third match point, with Jeanjean struggling to find a response to her counterpart's strong returns.
