Fritz digs deep to set up all-American Eastbourne final
Taylor Fritz is chasing a record-extending fourth title at Eastbourne, with Jenson Brooksby standing in his way in the final on Saturday.
Taylor Fritz had to dig deep against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to book his place in the Eastbourne final.
The reigning champion had to do the job in three sets but earned a convincing 6-3 3-6 6-1 in 94 minutes on Friday to set up a meeting with Jenson Brooksby.
Fritz started strong, surging into a 3-0 lead as he broke to love, and though Davidovich Fokina tried to pull himself back into the set, the American got over the line by taking it on the second attempt.
However, the Spaniard responded with a break to love of his own in the second set as he took a 4-1 lead, and he held his nerve to force a decider, finishing strongly on serve.
Fritz had a slight wobble at the start of the third set but successfully defended a break point in the opening game on his way to another 3-0 lead.
Davidovich Fokina could not halt his momentum despite forcing another break point, as Fritz defended that and cruised into Saturday's showpiece.

He will face compatriot Brooksby for the title, after the 24-year-old came from behind to beat fourth seed Ugo Humbert 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-4 earlier on Friday.
Brooksby has become the first lucky loser to reach the final in tournament history, and is looking to win a second ATP Tour title, having triumphed in Houston earlier this year.
"I thought I stayed really resilient, even after a tough first set that I was leading through a good amount [but] let it slip," said Brooksby.
"I think it's a lot less pressure when you don't expect to be in the main draw and get the opportunity… You just want to make the most of it."
Meanwhile, at the Mallorca Open, Tallon Griekspoor and Corentin Moutet will face off for the trophy on Saturday.
The Frenchman is into his second tour-level final after a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) victory over Alex Michelsen, 1,994 days after his first (Doha Open, 2020).
Griekspoor will stand in his way of a first title, though, after he continued his strong start to the grass-court season with a 6-4 6-4 win against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Data Debrief: Fritz extends impressive Eastbourne run
Fritz is no stranger to Eastbourne and made it four wins from four semi-finals at the event as he looks to close in on a fourth title.
His three titles are already a record, having triumphed in 2019, 2022 and 2024, and another win would secure his second title of 2025.
Fritz is tied with Brooksby 1-1 in their head-to-head, with the former winning their most recent meeting at the Australian Open earlier this year.
