Real Madrid 'need to switch gears' ahead of Bayern clash, says Arbeloa

Real Madrid's LaLiga hopes took a huge blow after they lost 2-1 to Mallorca, and Alvaro Arbeloa is now focused on the Champions League.

Alvaro Arbeloa has urged his Real Madrid side "to switch gears" and turn their attention to their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich.

Los Blancos' LaLiga title ambitions suffered a major setback after they lost 2-1 to Mallorca on Saturday.

Vedat Muriqi scored a 91st-minute winner for Mallorca, netting his 19th league goal of the season.

Excluding the Club World Cup, Madrid have lost 10 matches in the 2025-26 season. Through 46 matches, this is their second-worst return in any of the last 17 campaigns, having lost 14 times by this stage of 2018-19.

Los Blancos have conceded at least one goal in each of their last seven league games, their longest run of conceding goals in the competition since October 2022 (also seven).

And things got worse for them a few hours later, as Robert Lewandowski's late goal handed Barcelona a 2-1 win over 10-man Atletico Madrid.

Madrid are now seven points behind Barca with eight games remaining, and no team has ever won LaLiga from such a position at this stage of a season.

Madrid now face Bayern on Tuesday in the Champions League, with the Bundesliga outfit one of the favourites to win the competition.

Arbeloa, however, backs his side to bounce back from their defeat against Mallorca and get a result against Bayern, with the help of their fans.

"I know what my players are capable of," said the Real Madrid boss after the loss.

"I know they understand the importance of Tuesday's match, and sometimes you just don't have your day, things don't work out, and today was one of those days.

"So, we need to switch gears now, prepare well for that match, because we don't have much time, and the level of demand will be extremely high on Tuesday.

"I'm confident that the Madrid fans will give us another great Champions League night, as they have been doing and supporting us in recent matches.

"Without them, everything is harder, and with them, everything is much easier."
