Mbappe suffers hamstring injury two weeks before El Clasico

Less than two weeks before Real Madrid and Barcelona face off in a game that could see the Blaugrana win LaLiga, Kylian Mbappe is injured.

Real Madrid have confirmed Kylian Mbappe has sustained a hamstring injury less than two weeks out from their Clasico showdown with Barcelona.

Mbappe was substituted during Friday's 1-1 draw with Real Betis, a result that allowed Barca to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga to 11 points by beating Getafe 2-0 a day later.

The Blaugrana now know that if that advantage remains the same after matchday 34, when they visit Osasuna and Madrid face Espanyol, they could inflict further pain on Los Blancos by wrapping up the title in El Clasico on May 10.

Barca could even be champions before then, if they beat Osasuna and Madrid fail to win at RCDE Stadium.

And though reports in the Spanish media have suggested Mbappe could return to face Barca, Madrid face an anxious wait regarding his condition.

"Tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by the medical staff of Real Madrid have confirmed an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left leg," a club statement said on Monday.

"His recovery will depend on how the injury evolves."

Mbappe's injury comes after Arda Guler and Eder Militao were ruled out for the remainder of Madrid's season last week, also with hamstring issues.

Mbappe has battled niggling fitness concerns all campaign, though he has still scored 41 times in all competitions since the end of last year's Club World Cup.

Only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane has outscored him in that time, among all players from the top five European leagues, with the England captain netting 53 times.

Mbappe will hope there are no complications with his recovery ahead of the World Cup, with France facing Senegal in their opening match on June 16.
