Brook and Stokes keep England in driving seat against Zimbabwe

England are in total control against Zimbabwe, holding a 270-run lead over the tourists, who followed on in day two at Trent Bridge.

England's dominance continued on day two of their one-off Test against Zimbabwe, with Ben Stokes showing signs of his best in attack.

Brian Bennett struck an incredible century for the tourists, who still have a mountain to climb as they are 270 runs behind, having followed on into their second innings.

Ollie Pope and Harry Brook started at the crease as England continued to build on their record-breaking opening day total of 398, but the former only managed two more runs before edging behind for 171.

Brook (58) made a 48-ball half-century, despite starting the day with just nine from 27 deliveries, but after three consecutive sixes, Blessing Muzarabani (3-143) took his third wicket, prompting Stokes to declare on 565-6.

Sam Cook then took his maiden wicket in the third over, dismissing Ben Curran, but Bennett (139) stole the show, plundering Zimbabwe's fastest Test hundred from 97 balls.

He was eventually taken by Josh Tongue, while Shoaib Bashir (3-62) and Stokes (2-58), who took a quickfire double in 11 deliveries, helped restrict the tourists to 265.

They then picked straight back up at the crease, which was not as profitable for Bennett, who was trapped lbw by Gus Atkinson for just one in the fourth over.

Sean Williams' 22 helped take them to 30-2 in their second innings, with Craig Ervine also dismissed by Tongue, leaving Zimbabwe with a lot of work to do on day three.

Data Debrief: Bennett shines amid England dominance

England's three centurions did most of the heavy lifting on day one, and it was Bennett who will instead steal a share of the spotlight after Friday.

His century was the backbone of Zimbabwe's first innings, and it included 26 fours (104) as he pulled off an extraordinary feat.

It was just his second Test century, and only the third his nation have scored against England.

Bashir, meanwhile, became the youngest English bowler to take 50 wickets with the first of his three-for haul.
