Fermin to miss World Cup for Spain with foot injury
Fermin Lopez has enjoyed a strong 2025-26 campaign for Barcelona, but he will play no part in Spain's World Cup squad after surgery.
Fermin Lopez has confirmed he will not be playing at the World Cup after having successful surgery on a fractured foot.
Fermin was taken off at half-time during Barcelona's 3-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday, with the club announcing the injury following the game.
The Spaniard has been a key figure in Hansi Flick's side this season on their way to winning the LaLiga title, making 48 appearances in all competitions, with only Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin (both 50) playing more.
Fermin has also registered the joint-most assists (17, level with Lamine Yamal), while also scoring 13 goals.
"The surgery went very well, and I'm already thinking about coming back stronger, both physically and mentally," Fermin, who made three appearances in Spain's World Cup qualifying campaign, said in a post on social media.
"Life and football can be cruel when you least expect or deserve it, but you have to accept that it's all part of the journey. It's a very tough time for me, and another challenge in my career that I will overcome; have no doubt about it.

"Now it's time to support the national team and my team-mates from home.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for your support and kind messages."
Spain are the favourites to win the World Cup according to the Opta supercomputer, triumphing in 16% of the pre-tournament simulations.
Luis de la Fuente is set to name his squad on May 25, with Spain then playing two friendlies against Iraq and Peru before kicking off their tournament against Cape Verde on June 15.
They will also face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
