England 'building something special' despite missing out on Six Nations title

England fell short of winning the Six Nations, though Ben Curry remains optimistic for the future.

Ben Curry believes England are "building something special" after narrowly missing out on the Six Nations title to France.

England scored 10 tries as they hammered Wales 68-14, though France's 35-16 victory over Scotland saw Les Bleus clinch the crown later on Saturday.

The 54-point victory was the largest of any team against Wales in a Six Nations game; only once before have they conceded more points in a Test match (96-13 v South Africa in 1998).

Despite missing out on glory, Curry expressed his pride in England's record-breaking showing and hard-fought campaign.

"This team has been through a lot, I'm really happy for everyone involved," Curry told BBC One after his man-of-the-match performance.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to be able to give that to not just ourselves, but to the fans as well.

"This is what you dream of. I love being part of this team. I haven't had too many opportunities in the last two years, but I've loved coming into camp, I've loved this team.

"Even the lads who aren't playing are helping the lads in the week, it's a proper team effort. I feel we're building something special."

England's 10 tries against Wales saw their tally rise to 25 in this year's Six Nations, their second-highest tally in an edition of the Championship (29 in 2001).

It looked like their convincing win had thrown France off course, too, taking just a three-point lead into half-time against Scotland, but they ultimately prevailed to take the crown for the first time since 2022.

There was still plenty for Steve Borthwick to be proud of, with Tommy Freeman scoring a try in each of his five games in this year's Six Nations and becoming just the second player to score in all five rounds of a campaign after Philippe Bernat-Salles in 2001, though France's Louis Bielle-Biarrey subsequently joined that club with a try against Scotland.

Henry Pollock, aged 20 years and 60 days, also became the youngest player to score in the tournament for England, overtaking Henry Arundell, who was 20 years and 96 days old when he scored against Italy in 2023.

"We challenged them to go out and play with the attitude that we wanted to play big and they did exactly that," England head coach Borthwick said.

"All the England fans out there – there were so many of them and they were so loud, probably the loudest I've ever heard them in Cardiff – I'm so happy that they've got plenty to cheer about.

"I'm delighted I get the privilege of coaching this young group of players. I think this has got the makings of a very good team."
