England must manage Stokes' bowling loads after latest hamstring injury, Trescothick says

England assistant Marcus Trescothick provided an update on Ben Stokes, after the skipper suffered a hamstring injury against New Zealand.

Marcus Trescothick acknowledged England will have to manage Ben Stokes' bowling workloads, following the skipper's latest injury setback.

Stokes suffered a left hamstring injury as the tourists slid towards defeat in their third Test with New Zealand in Hamilton.

It was a recurrence of the injury that ruled him out of four Tests earlier this year on a frustrating third day for his side, who require 640 to snatch an improbable win at Seddon Park.

Stokes pulled up on the follow-through of the second delivery in his third over on day three, and was visibly distressed as he headed straight for the dressing room.

The 33-year-old, who left the stadium with his hamstring strapped at the conclusion of day three, has bowled 36.2 overs in this Test - his most in a single match since June 2022.

Stokes will await the results of a scan, but assistant coach Trescothick knows England must moderate his volume of bowling going forward.

"Maybe, it's a case that you manage his bowling loads, and he doesn't bowl the volume that he's bowled in this game," he told BBC Sport. "We'll just have to look at how we manage it."

"It's always challenging when it's in the same area as before. Is it the same injury? We don't know. Until we get those scan results, we're not going to know.

"Naturally, he was upset. That has calmed down a little bit now. He's done plenty of icing, and seen the doctors and the physio. He'll get advice, then hopefully that makes a decision for him."
